Introduction

Interdisciplinary fields are expected to play an important and influential role in the future of science and technology, based on the global development process of science and technology and Iranian upstream documents. As a result, creating and strengthening the development of infrastructure and efficient human resources are among the priorities of universities. For this purpose having a stable, purposeful, and balanced structure in the leading educational and research institutes is necessary. These institutes have mastered both the world's sciences and technologies and could bring together the country's eminent scientists in a unit structure. In this regard, following the strategic plan of the Sharif University of Technology, the Institute for Convergence Science and Technology was established with the aim of leading intradisciplinary and interdisciplinary fields. This institute has prioritized connections with esteemed scientific institutions at the national and international levels as well as the synergy of faculty members' and researchers' scientific activities at the Sharif University of Technology. In addition to the frontiers of knowledge, the strategy of research and technology activities is to address the demands and concerns of the country in areas including data sciences, communication, health, environment, and energy.

History

According to the Sharif University of Technology's Institute for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, which has been operating since 2005, and other successful interdisciplinary activities, a plan to establish the institute of convergence science and technology was pursued starting in 2018. The university council approved the institute's statute in September 2021. This Institute facility is now set up as Center for Bioscience and Technology, Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Center for Information Systems and Data Science, Center for Cognitive Science and Center for Quantum Science and Technology. In addition, the Institute for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology's PhD program in nanoscience and nanotechnology, which was launched in 2006, will continue. The International Conference of Nanostructures (ICNS) is another example of one of this institute's ongoing operations.

The objectives and plans of the research institute include:

  • Taking advantage of all the facilities and potential of the human resources available in the university and creating a system of synergy and cooperation through the formation of research groups including full-time professors, faculty members, researchers of the departments, and other institutes researchers of the university.

  • Implementing joint programs with other institutions and scientific and research societies through active and international scientific communication

  • Conducting fundamental research and exploring new frontiers of knowledge both interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary

  • Establishing national research plans and developing the necessary procedures to provide financial resources.

  • Training specialized and skilled human resources in the required areas of the country

  • Developing the necessary hardware and software infrastructure for activities

  • Technology development in interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary fields

  • Organizing conferences and research events
